Conversations with many groups have been taking place over South Tyneside as part of our exciting research project reflecting on experiences of loneliness and isolation. It has been led by Dr Stefanie Conradt, a current fellow of the William Leech Research Fund, in collaboration with Churches Together South Tyneside and Regent’s Park College, Oxford University
Our groups have included older people from our community, members of local churches, representatives of partner agencies, academics and our own trustees. The conversations have been interesting, heartwarming and at times upsetting. Memories have been stirred, the realities of lives shared and observations made. Our aim is to suggest practical ways to make life less lonely for our elderly residents.
In November we are holding a conference to share Stefanie’s report and suggestions. In the New Year, we will be inviting local people to come together so we can watch the film we have made and consider how we can work together to make life better for lonely and isolated older people. Last year South Shields Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal provided gifts to over 350 people, mostly children. This year we are expecting to have at least as many requests, probably more.
We know times are hard for everyone, but we also know the joy of giving a present to brighten a child’s Christmas. We would be delighted to receive any donations of new, unwrapped presents this Christmas. We are also grateful for any financial donations, which enable us to buy presents for the age groups we know will be under-represented.
On the attached poster is a QR code which will lead to our JustGiving page, or we can accept cash donations. If your church decides to support our appeal as a collective, we would be happy to arrange a day to collect/receive any donations, with some photographs on handover to use for publicity/bulletins.
Ideally we need all donations by the 11th December to give us time to sort, pick, pack and deliver the parcels to the families before the schools break up. If any arrive late, we may still use them this year for our emergency requests, otherwise we store them to use next year.
Finally, we would be happy to receive a few new volunteers to help pick and pack the presents. If anyone is interested, please ask them to contact me (Captain Emma) on 07436 910 276 or email [email protected].
We are planning to do this during 10-13 December (day time) but every volunteer will need to fill in a contact form and be timetabled in advance. Volunteers will need to be able to walk up a flight of stairs to our ‘workshop’.
May God bless you all in your preparations for Advent and Christmas this year.
